Additional Information

American Civil Rights activist, legal scholar, and Episcopal Priest Pauli Murray remains one of the most iconic leaders of the movement and an influential voice in the fight for gender equality during the twentieth century. At the age of 16, Murray moved to New York City to attend Hunter College. In 1940, Murray was arrested in Virginia for sitting in a segregated portion of a bus, which sparked her interest in becoming a civil rights attorney. When she enrolled at Harvard University, she was the only woman in her class and was denied the ability to perform post-graduate work due to her gender.

Murray coined the term "Jane Crow" in reference to these discriminatory practices, and she strove to fight for women's rights as well as the rights of Black Americans leading up to the middle portion of the twentieth century. Murray is pictured here after receiving the 1964 Mademoiselle Merit for Signal Achievement Award. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall called Murray's 1950 book States' Laws on Race and Color the "bible" of the civil rights movement, and her influence within the movement remains among the most significant of anyone involved.

Murray represents the continued fight for ending discrimination based on race or gender, and her work has influenced political activists worldwide. This photograph captures Murray at the beginning of her political career as her influence would grow in the Civil Rights movement, and she would go on to gain international acclaim for her activism, political writing, and legal theories.
