It lays out provinces, mountains, and waterways across a colossal expanse, capturing an era when the West hungered to picture the farthest reaches of Asia.

The Homann Heirs counted among Germany's premier map publishers, successors to a house that supplied much of the continent with geography. Their depiction of China relied on surveys the Kangxi emperor had ordered from Jesuit missionaries, findings later relayed to the West by French royal geographers.

That lineage gave the map an accuracy uncommon for its day, picturing the empire with a precision few earlier European efforts could match. Stately cartouches frame the composition, while Latin lettering identifies the provinces, marrying meticulous geography with the polished aesthetic of the German workshop tradition.

Nearly three centuries old, this magnificent map stands as a testament to an age when Europe sought to fathom the wealth of the East, offering a window into how the Western world envisioned China. A masterful centerpiece for collectors of antique Asian cartography, it rewards a lifetime of close study.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0504/5459/3725/files/1Eg0ARj90r-lEWOTbDCaxPlK6plYX2ea9_w1000.jpg?v=1791603173
