The Yu Ji Tu or Map of the Tracks of Yu Gong is one of the earliest known maps of China and is highly regarded for its geographical accuracy considering the stone map was originally engraved in 1137. The image here was produced from a rubbing of the original stone map in 1903.The Yu Ji Tu is the first map to utilize a rectilinear grid system, and its cartographic accuracy is comparable to twentieth-century mapmaking. Another defining feature that makes this such a remarkable piece of cartographical history is the meticulous accuracy of the coastlines and river systems, especially the Yellow and Yangtze rivers and their tributaries.
The grid breaks down into squares that translate to roughly 31 miles each and identifies nearly seventy mountains, five lakes, and nearly eighty rivers. This map is one of the earliest examples of Ji Li Hua Fang style, which was the most science-based method of the three early Chinese map styles.
During this period, China was ruled by the Southern Song Dynasty in the South and the Manchurian Jurchen Jin north of the Yellow River. Through their cartographical efforts to reunify to the boundaries as laid out by the Emperor Yu. Rubbings have been made from this stele for hundreds of years. Its unique aesthetic, distinctive style, and attention to detail immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between past and present.
