Additional Information
Dating to 1482, this is the world the Greeks and Romans knew, the three continents of Europe, Africa, and Asia arranged across Ptolemy's net of meridians and parallels. Heads of the twelve winds girdle the perimeter, and not a trace of the Americas yet breaks the encircling ocean.
The map follows the coordinates of Ptolemy, the geographer of Alexandria, whose system of latitude and longitude was a true innovation. Printed at Ulm in 1482, it was augmented by Nicolaus Germanus, who pushed the northern limit outward to take in Iceland and a misplaced Greenland.
A few glaring misjudgments mark the sheet. A southern land bridge seals the Indian Ocean into an inland lagoon binding Africa to Asia, and the inhabited earth runs far past its real extent, a flaw that later tempted sailors to gamble on a short western passage.
This map stands as a testament to the rebirth of geography after its long sleep, offering a window into the globe as it stood before the great discoveries. Among the most momentous maps ever made, it lends an archaic mystique to any living room, office, or study.
