Additional Information
Dating to around 1570, this Italian map recreates ancient Rome as it stood at the height of the early empire. An elevated vision of the imperial capital, it arrays temples, theaters, public baths, and bridges across the famed seven hills, conjuring the metropolis near the dawn of the first century.
The design springs from Pirro Ligorio, the Renaissance polymath and antiquarian who served as the Vatican's papal architect. Drawing on ruins, coins, and inscriptions, he assembled the first large recreation of Rome as it appeared under Augustus, near the time of the birth of Christ.
Hundreds of structures crowd the composition, each set down with the care of a scholar devoted to antiquity. Towering colonnades, soaring monuments, aqueducts, and forums fill the scene, many labeled in Latin, reviving on paper a capital that had long since passed into legend.
This map stands as a testament to Europe's abiding awe before the splendor of Rome, offering a window into a lost world of emperors, temples, and triumphal ways. Long regarded as a definitive image of the ancient city, it lends classical majesty to any living room, office, or study.
