Additional Information
Dating to 1572, this map gives all Asia, the greatest of the continents, from the Levant and Asia Minor in the west across Persia and India to China and Japan in the far east, and down to the islands of the Indies in the south.
Abraham Ortelius of Antwerp set this map down from his own 1567 map of Asia and the tales of Marco Polo, the great Venetian traveller who had seen far Cathay. It comes from his Theatrum Orbis Terrarum, the path-breaking atlas he gave the world in 1570.
Here the lands of the East come out oddly. Japan is a top-heavy blot like a tadpole, the Caspian Sea is laid east to west, and Arabia is puffed and distended. Two ships ply the sea off China, and in the far south-east lies a great land still nameless.
This map stands as a testament to the East as Europe once dreamed it, offering a window into a continent still half rumour and half guess. One of the most intriguing of all old maps of Asia, it lends a remote, far-eastern enchantment to any living room, office, or study.
