Additional Information
Dating to 1572, this map shows all the world as a single great oval, centred on the Atlantic, with every land and sea then known to Europe set down together on one sheet, from the far north to the far south.
This sheet comes first in the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum of Abraham Ortelius of Antwerp, taken mainly from Gerard Mercator's map of 1569 and the maps of Gastaldi and Gutierrez. It was the first world map ever bound in an atlas, and the most seen in its day.
The oval is wreathed in cloud, its name set in a scroll above. A great continent sits across the south to counterweight the north, while a frigate rides the open seas. Along the foot runs a thought from Cicero on the smallness of human cares.
This map stands as a testament to the world as it was then known in full, offering a window into the age that gave us the atlas. One of the most seminal of all old world maps, it lends a thoughtful, cosmic gravitas to any living room, office, or study.
