Additional Information
Dating to 1581, this strange world map is drawn as a three-leaf clover, with the holy city of Jerusalem placed at its hub. The three leaves stand for the continents then mapped, Europe, Asia, and Africa, all set around the city at its heart.
The work is by Heinrich Bünting, a Protestant pastor and theologian of Hanover. It comes from his travel guide through Holy Scripture, a journey across the lands of the Bible, while the clover itself is the old town badge of Hanover, the fatherland he loved.
From Jerusalem the three continents open out like the leaves of the clover. Beyond them lie England, Scandinavia, and, off in one far corner, America the New World, while the seas about them are all alive with ships, mermaids, and sea serpents.
This map stands as a testament to a world of faith more than measure, offering a window into an age that set Jerusalem at the heart of things. One of the most fanciful of all old maps, it lends a quaint, devout whimsy to any living room, office, or study.
