Additional Information

Created around 1589 by the Italian cartographer Baptista Boazio, this remarkable set of engravings documents Sir Francis Drake's celebrated West Indian voyage of 1585 to 1586. The collection includes a map tracing the fleet's route alongside four bird's-eye battle views of Santiago, Santo Domingo, Cartagena, and St. Augustine.

Drake departed Plymouth in September 1585 with twenty-three ships, raiding colonial ports across the Caribbean before striking the fortified settlement at St. Augustine in Florida. The expedition returned to Portsmouth in July 1586 carrying plunder that proved England's growing ability to challenge Iberian dominance of the New World.

Boazio prepared these images to illustrate the official account of the voyage written by Walter Bigges and Lieutenant Croftes. The map appears in English while the city compositions carry Latin inscriptions, reflecting the international audience that followed Drake's exploits with fascination and alarm.

This reproduction provides insight into the age of Elizabethan sea power when privateers reshaped the balance of authority across the Atlantic. Considered among the most significant cartographic records of the sixteenth century, it brings extraordinary historical depth to any office, study, or library.
