Additional Information

Johannes Vingboons illustrated this incredibly unique map of California, and it remains one of the oldest depictions of the region created by a European. Vingboons unique style is a thoughtful blend of his artistic upbringing and his later work as a cartographer. It features a unique aesthetic and distinctive style that immediately transports the viewer back in time. His watercolors were produced using comprehensive research and illustrations from ship captains, helmsmen, and merchants who were voraciously exploring the globe in the seventeenth century. For numerous Dutch Trade regions, Vingboons are the earliest known illustrations and are valuable pieces of European cartographical history.

The first Spanish explorers entered San Diego Bay as early as 1542, and the region was commonly depicted as an Island well into the eighteenth century. However, inland excursions became increasingly common as the Spanish established settlements and missions in the region. This map has a remarkable minimal design that is characteristic of the period, though it also represents some of the most technical illustrations of the era and is a critical link as advances in technology made maps more accurate. California’s rich history has been influenced by Spanish, Mexican, Indigenous, and Asian influences for centuries.

From the earliest explorations, the region would remain a critical source of agriculture and would be transformed by the middle of the nineteenth century with the Gold Rush and subsequent influx of immigrants from across America and Western Europe. This remains an enduring piece of early American history from a European perspective.
