Additional Information
Dating to 1657, this plan shows Paris under the young Louis XIV. The city crowds both banks of the Seine, the Île de la Cité set midstream, while a crooked weave of streets and gardens fills the space inside the old ramparts.
In 1657 Paris was the capital of Louis XIV, with Cardinal Mazarin governing in his name. The city had only just come through the Fronde, the great revolt of princes and parlement that shook France in the early 1650s, and was now at rest.
Within the walls the river cuts the plan into three. The Cité sits on its island, the old town fills the right bank to the north, and the Université spreads across the south. Beyond the gates, the faubourgs reach out into the open country.
This map stands as a testament to Paris at the start of the Sun King's long age, offering a window into a capital recovering from the Fronde. One of the most telling early plans of the city, it lends a genteel, patrician pomp to any living room, office, or study.
