Additional Information
Produced and published by prominent London-based bookseller, geographer, and engraver William Berry this distinguished publication is a rare piece of early cartographical history. During the seventeenth century, numerous expeditions were discovering land across the globe, including in the America’s, South East Asia, and the Pacific and Indian Oceans. The Mediterranean Sea remained a focal point for European cartographers, and detailing it with greater accuracy became the primary goal for illustrators and geographers across Northern and Western Europe.
The distinctive style, ornate flourishes, and incredible detail immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Berry was unique as a cartographer in the seventeenth century as it was primarily a craft conducted by the Dutch, whose competency was unrivaled at the time, save for a select few, Berry included. Berry’s career would span more than four decades, and he was one of the most prolific English cartographers of his time.
The Mediterranean Sea’s significance and history are undeniable, and it remains one of the most critical regions to this day. Early civilizations utilized the relatively calm sea to spread knowledge, trade goods, and travel throughout Africa, Europe, and the Middle East. The opening of the Suez Canal in 1868 further increased access to Asia as ships no longer had to sail south past the Cape of Good Hope on Africa’s southernmost coast. The cultural and historical significance of the Mediterranean Sea and its iconic coasts are given new context with this antique production.
