Published in 1796 following massive fires that destroyed much of the town center, including Christ Church, the first established church in the city. As the oldest city in Georgia, Savannah has a rich history and is one of the American south's most iconic cities. Savannah was a thriving and prosperous city throughout the nineteenth century and was the southernmost part of the original thirteen colonies. It was the original state capital and the strategic location on the Savannah River.
Pulled from one of the most extensive collections of Americana which date from 1700-1995, this is truly a rare piece of American cartographical history. The first recorded history of Savannah dates to 1733, and it is considered to be the first planned city. It consisted of twenty-floor city squares, twenty-two of which exist to this day. The town became known for its iconic shaded, wide streets, which were laid out in a consistent grid, as evidenced in this depiction. The city had been held from 1778 to 1782 by British forces during the American Revolution and flourished in the years following the conclusion of the conflict.
During the late eighteenth and first half of the nineteenth centuries, Savannah was considered the most picturesque American City and was experiencing a significant period of economic growth a significant expansion in population. This depiction bears a unique aesthetic and distinctive style that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
