Additional Information
By the late 18th century, Maine was attempting to secede from Massachusetts, and growing support for independence from the state was gaining tremendous popularity. Produced by prominent early American cartographer DF Sotzmann, this illustration shows the state in a time of growth and transition. Published a decade following the victory of the Continental forces in the American Revolution, this depiction would have been a valuable resource for European immigrants who were flocking to the state for millwork and jobs in the logging industry.
Of particular interest for historians and genealogists is the illustration of the patterns of land ownership and transfer. As Massachusetts found itself short on revenue following the Revolution, and Government Leaders started selling off plots of land in Maine in a lottery system in 1786.
As communities were established, the push for secession continued, and Mainers would ultimately achieve statehood nearly two decades later in 1820. Maine was experiencing a population expansion that would last for three decades from 1790 to 1820. The War of 1812 saw American and British forces battling over control of the Northern border and increased secessionist sentiments.
This map shows the Northern region of the state as nearly uncharted, and the states' rugged terrain made topographical surveying difficult, this is one of the first accurate depictions of Maine. As Maine neared the turn of the century, it was developing a unique and distinct culture, and this illustration transports the viewer back in time and is truly an authentic piece of American cartographical history.
