Additional Information
Since the seventeenth century, Paris has been a major cultural center of Western Europe and has influenced global culture, fashion, art, music, and literature. The French Revolution began in 1789 with the storming of the Bastille, a symbol of political authority. The revolution had been inspired by the Colonial defeat of the British in North America and would spark a wave of democratic reformation across Europe and eventually internationally. The city lost nearly one hundred thousand residents during the revolution, but by the time of this map’s publication had surged, reaching more than six hundred thousand. Though Napoleon would seize power in 1799 and rule until 1830 when the constitutional monarch Louis Philippe I came to power.
Perhaps the most iconic European city, Paris' wide boulevards and distinct neighborhoods are influenced by their proximity to the River Seine. Numerous museums hold some of the world's greatest pieces of art, including the Mona Lisa, and the Eiffel Tower remains the most visited monument on the planet. Paris has also been a leader in literature and publishing, with a history dating back to 1470.
Writers have been drawn to the city, and some of the most influential works of the twentieth century were written by expatriates who found a community in the numerous cafes dotting the Parisian streets. This map's unique aesthetic and minimal style illustrate the vastness of Paris' urban landscape. This piece was part of 13th President Millard Fillmore's extensive collection which is regarded as an invaluable source of cartographical history.
