Additional Information

Created between 1815 and 1845 by the distinguished artist and engraver James Barton Longacre, this portrait of Andrew Jackson was drawn directly from life, capturing the imposing presence of the man who would become the seventh President of the United States. The work depicts Jackson in a commanding bust composition that conveys the fierce determination for which he was renowned.

Jackson first rose to national prominence through his decisive victory at the Battle of New Orleans in January 1815, where his outnumbered forces repelled a seasoned British invasion force during the final engagement of the War of 1812. This triumph transformed him into a celebrated military hero and launched his trajectory toward the presidency, which he would claim in the landmark election of 1828.

Longacre himself went on to become the fourth Chief Engraver of the United States Mint, designing iconic American coinage including the Indian Head penny and the gold dollar. His artistic training under portraitist Thomas Sully and his meticulous approach to life studies gave his engravings a distinctive immediacy that set them apart from derivative works of the period.

This distinguished portrait offers a fascinating window into the early republic's most polarizing and transformative political figure, whose populist vision reshaped American democracy and expanded presidential power. The image remains a compelling piece of American political history, making it a significant addition to any collection celebrating the nation's formative leaders and the art of early American portraiture.
