Additional Information

Published around 1835 by Currier and Ives of New York, this sweeping view presents Trenton Falls cascading over broad limestone ledges in a series of powerful tiers along West Canada Creek. Several figures stand on the rock shelf between the drops, dwarfed by the sheer walls rising on either side.

The falls ranked as one of antebellum America's premier tourist destinations, drawing visitors who descended wooden stairways to walk beneath the thundering water. The Prince of Wales himself toured the gorge during his celebrated 1860 visit to North America, adding royal prestige to the site's already considerable fame.

Geologists prized the exposed cliff faces for their ancient marine fossils, while painters and poets found endless inspiration in the play of light across the cascading tiers. By the 1870s, however, a hydroelectric dam began to alter the flow, and the falls gradually lost the wild character that had made them legendary.

This reproduction provides insight into a vanished natural wonder at the height of its glory, before industry tamed waters that once roared freely through stone. Considered among the most striking waterfall prints of the period, it brings raw beauty to any living room, office, or den.
