Drawn by an artist known only as H.W.P. and printed in 1848 by Richard H. Pease of Albany, this charming view presents Aurora, New York, from a vantage point called the North Poplars. The settlement lines the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake in the heart of the Finger Lakes region.
Aurora grew into a prosperous community of Federal and Greek Revival homes, churches, and commercial buildings clustered above the waterfront during the early nineteenth century. Steamboats called regularly at the local dock, connecting residents to markets and neighboring towns along the length of the long glacial lake.
Henry Wells, cofounder of both the American Express Company and Wells Fargo, made Aurora his home and established Wells College there in 1868. His presence reflected the town's reputation as a refined and cultured place that attracted ambitious figures drawn by the serene landscape.
