Produced during a period of significant cultural and political transformation, this map of the United States and Canada shows the vastness of the American Northeast and its importance to the nation since the first settlers arrived and established communities along the Atlantic seaboard that would become essential for the founding fathers to eventually defeat British Colonial forces and establish a democratic government that would inspire nations around the globe to strive for independence from colonial rule. During the middle portion of the nineteenth century, the Northeastern United States was experiencing a period of significant prosperity as the Industrial Revolution saw the construction of large foundries, factories, and mills that would spur a population boom for the decades to follow.
This period was also quite significant politically as the nation neared the outbreak of the Civil War during the 1850s and politicians hotly debated the issue of state rights pertaining to the legality of slavery, among other issues. The United States was also in a period of growth with the conclusion of the Mexican American War in 1848, which would cement Texas' place in the nation, and the continued policy of Manifest Destiny, which saw citizens continuing to head west in search of prosperity, whether it be in the California Gold Mines or other mines across Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, New Mexico, and Arizona.
