Additional Information

Published by Lloyd van Derveer this map of Hunterdon County, New Jersey shows it in a period of significant growth and transformation as the country entered the second half of the nineteenth century. Originally founded in 1714, Hunterdon remains a centrally-located exurb that allows commuters to work in both New York City and Philadelphia. The County Seat, Flemington, was the site of some early skirmishes between Patriots and British Forces in the early days of the American Revolution. The County maintains a rich history and is centrally located in Western New Jersey, which allows for considerable access to major cities that surround it.

This county map shows the region as tensions between the North and South were mounting. Many Northeast states were beginning to construct manufacturing plants that attracted large groups of immigrants from across Ireland, and Western Europe. These groups established communities based on cultural lines throughout the County, many of which exist to this day. These regions also experienced significant growth throughout the latter portions of the nineteenth century as railroad expansion increased access and promoted robust population growth.

Hunterdon County remains an important economic center with some of the highest per capita incomes in the United States. In 1851 the county was growing exponentially as nearby Philadelphia, and New York spurred a regional transformation across the Northeast. Hunterdon County is distinct from the more major urban areas and is known for its woodlands and natural features. This is truly an authentic piece of American cartographical history.
