Produced and published by one of the most prolific American cartographers of the nineteenth century, this distinctive bird's eye perspective of Minnesota's State Capital depicts the iconic northern city in a period of significant growth and cultural evolution. Published by Philadelphia based cartographers Thompson-Ritchie, this panoramic depiction would have served as marketing materials to feature notable civic features to attract industrialists and workers alike. These illustrations bear an immediately recognizable aesthetic and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible link between the past and present.
Established primarily to the East of the Mississippi River, St. Paul became the State Capital in 1849 when the Minnesota Territory became formally recognized by the United States. It took nearly a full decade for Minnesota to achieve statehood, and when it did in 1858, St. Paul remained the capital. By the early 1860s, nearly one thousand steamboat services operated out of St. Paul, making it the gateway for eager settlers looking to reach the Dakota territories, and further access occurred when St. Paul became the headquarters for the Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railways.
The period leading up to the American Civil War was an economic boom time for St. Paul, and the city's population had expanded to more than ten thousand by 1860. The 1850s saw the region's transformation from a fur trapping and military outpost to one of the fastest-growing cities in the American north. This unique portrayal of St. Paul is a genuine piece of cartographical history.
