Created by noted British engraver and cartographer, Sidney Hall, this distinctive piece depicts Scotland in a period of significant development during the mid-nineteenth century. While his most famous works were his world atlases with detailed representations of the United Kingdom, his works which focused on the individual nations of Great Britain, are among his most celebrated. Hall produced maps for William Faden and the A&C Black firm, which still publishes books and atlases to this day after its founding in 1807. Each of these publishers and producers is recognized as some of the most prominent and prolific mapmakers of the nineteenth century.
Covering the northern third of Great Britain, Scotland bears a distinct culture from its southern nature and is among the most iconic places in Great Britain. Scotland was a sovereign state from the early Middle Ages until its inclusion in Great Britain in 1807 following the succession of James VI to the British throne. Industrialization and urbanization were widespread throughout the nineteenth century. By the time of this maps publication Glasgow, Edinburgh, and Aberdeen had become significant cultural centers with major manufacturing industries attracting residents from the countryside.
Scotland’s ties to Celtic culture have endured and remained an integral part of its national identity.
