Additional Information
Published by Currier and Ives of New York during the mid-nineteenth century, this dramatic biblical scene portrays the prophet Daniel standing serenely among fierce lions within the royal pit, his hands clasped in prayer as the beasts gather around him without causing harm.
The image draws from the Book of Daniel, where the Hebrew prophet served as advisor to King Darius of Persia around the sixth century BCE. Jealous court officials conspired to have Daniel cast into the lions' den for refusing to abandon his devotion to the God of Israel.
Currier and Ives issued numerous religious subjects during an age of widespread Protestant revival, when Sunday schools flourished and scriptural imagery decorated countless American parlors. Such affordable devotional prints brought familiar biblical narratives into humble households, reinforcing faith traditions carried westward by pioneer families settling new frontiers.
This reproduction stands as evidence of a time when scripture shaped daily life and miraculous stories offered comfort through hardship and uncertainty. Considered among the most sought-after religious prints of the period, it brings spiritual depth to any study, library, chapel, or family room.
