Additional Information

Photographed between 1856 and 1860 by British photographer Frank Mason Good, this striking image presents the Golden Gate set within the eastern wall of Jerusalem's Old City. Prickly pear cactus grows thickly at the base of the sealed double archway, which faces the Mount of Olives across the Kidron Valley.

Known in Hebrew as Sha'ar HaRachamim and in Arabic as Bab al-Rahma, the gate holds profound significance across three major faiths. The current visible structure dates to the sixth or seventh century, though the site is believed to have served as a gateway to the Temple Mount for far longer.

Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent ordered the entrance sealed around 1541, and it has remained closed for nearly five centuries. Jewish and Christian traditions hold that it will reopen at the coming of the Messiah, while a Muslim cemetery was established before the wall to consecrate the ground.

This reproduction provides insight into the sacred geography of Jerusalem as it appeared before the modern era reshaped the landscape beyond its ancient stones. Considered among the most significant early photographs of the Holy City, it brings spiritual and historical depth to any study, chapel, or living room.
