Additional Information

Captured in Springfield, Illinois on June 3, 1860, this distinguished portrait by renowned photographer Alexander Hesler depicts Abraham Lincoln shortly after securing the Republican presidential nomination. The striking composition presents the future sixteenth president with characteristic dignity, his determined gaze conveying the resolve that would define his historic leadership.

Lincoln himself declared this portrait his personal favorite, stating it expressed him better than any other image ever created. The sitting occurred during the pivotal campaign that would elevate the prairie lawyer from regional politician to commander-in-chief of a nation on the brink of civil war.

The original glass plates survived through collector George B. Ayres, who acquired them when purchasing Hesler's gallery following the conflict. Ayres produced quality prints in 1881 before the fragile negatives were eventually damaged, with duplicate plates now preserved by the Chicago Historical Society for posterity.

This remarkable photograph stands as a testament to the hopeful ambition of a candidate who would become America's most revered president. The powerful image offers a window into Lincoln before the burdens of war transformed his features, making it an extraordinary addition to any collection celebrating American political history.
