Additional Information

Published in 1860 by J. W. Canfield of Canfield, Ohio, this large wall map records Mahoning County parcel by parcel, marking the original lots and farm holdings. Fifteen village plans appear as insets, alongside views of homes, storefronts, and public buildings across the townships.

Maps of this type were sold by subscription, with each landowner's name printed on his parcel so buyers could find themselves on the sheet. They served as legal reference, parlor ornament, and status object, and they remain a first stop for genealogical research today.

Mahoning County had been organized only fourteen years earlier from parts of two older counties, its territory taken from lands opened to settlement after the Revolution and divided by a rectangular survey. Coal and iron along the river were already drawing furnaces to the valley.

The sheet stands as a testament to a young county's confidence in its own permanence and offers a window into who held which acre on the eve of the Civil War. Prized by family historians and regional collectors, it elevates a study or den.
