Additional Information
Published in 1861, this stirring print depicts a Zouave sentry on a promontory as dawn breaks in the form of the American flag. Inspired by Frederic Edwin Church's painting "Our Banner in the Sky," the image transforms a sunrise into a symbol of Union resolve as the Civil War began.
The print emerged amid the patriotic fervor following the bombardment of Fort Sumter in April 1861. Church's painting, showing the flag formed by the dawn sky, became an iconic early war image and inspired this adaptation, which adds a Zouave sentry and a distant fort to the original composition.
Patriotic prints played a vital role in rallying sentiment during the Civil War, circulating through homes and public spaces across the Union. Published in New York by the firm of Sarony, Major and Knapp, this print reflects the sophisticated color printing that placed compelling wartime imagery before a broad audience.
This evocative print stands as a testament to the power of patriotic imagery during the Civil War, offering a window into the visual culture that sustained Union morale during the conflict's earliest days. It appeals to collectors of Civil War memorabilia, American flag iconography, and nineteenth-century patriotic artwork.
