Published on October 24, 1862, by E. Sachse and Company of Baltimore, this bird's-eye view presents Camp Millington, the training ground of the 128th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Rows of tents stretch in orderly lines while troops drill and move between company streets.
The regiment drew its ranks from the farming communities of Columbia and Dutchess Counties in the Hudson Valley, mustering in September 1862. After brief training, the men deployed to Louisiana, fighting in the siege of Port Hudson and the Red River Campaign under General Nathaniel Banks.
Sachse's firm produced dozens of encampment views during the conflict, selling them to eager volunteers who sent the prints home as keepsakes. Families treasured these images as tangible connections to loved ones stationed far away, displaying them proudly until their boys returned from the front.
