Additional Information
Produced by notable cartographer, illustrator, and publisher Charles Magnus, this rare depiction of Montreal shows the City in a period of considerable transformation. Incorporated in 1832, Montreal remains the second-largest City in Canada and a significant exporter of culture, technology, and education. Magnus was born in Germany and established his firm in New York City in the late 1840s. His publications are well regarded for their accuracy, detail, and distinctive minimalist style.
By the time of this maps publication Montreal was the largest Canadian City and inarguably the economic and cultural center of the Nation. As the United States engaged in the Civil War, Montreal was experiencing a significant boom in the 1860s that had seen the population expand rapidly during the preceding three decades after completing the Lachine Canal and increasing access to the City from across North America. Its population would more than quadruple by the turn of the century.
During the middle of the nineteenth century, the City established a network of pipes and cisterns to provide drinking water from the St. Lawrence River, Canada's first of its kind. Though Montreal was the capital of the province of Canada from 1854 to 1859, the burning of its Parliament building by Tory protestors forced Queen Victoria to name Ottawa as Capital due to its natural geographic fortifications and inland location. The unique aesthetic of this work immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present in this authentic piece of cartographical history.
