Arizona had officially been declared a territory in 1861, and this map published at the conclusion of the Civil War shows the region in a time of significant transformation. The region which had been ceded to the United States in the Hidalgo Treaty of 1848 with the defeat of Mexico in the Mexican-American War. The landscape made settlement difficult, but with Union Pacific’s completion of the transcontinental railroad in 1869, the American Southwest was opened up to eager homesteaders that established vast cattle ranches through the region.
While Arizona had declared itself a member of the Confederacy during the Civil War, effective Confederate control ended with the Battle of Glorietta Pass in March of 1862 with Confederate forces retreating to El Paso. Confederate troops would remain out of Arizona for the remainder of the war. While the territory would not achieve statehood until 1912, Arizona enjoyed a period of relative growth in the latter half of the nineteenth century with expanded access as towns sprang up near rail stops.
Copper mining became an important economic driver within the region, and by 1907 Arizona had been dubbed “The Copper State,” with the territory producing more copper than any other state. Created by noted American cartographer William Hartley, this detailed depiction of Arizona at the close of the Civil War immediately transports the viewer back in time. These illustrations became essential tools as national and international boundaries were drawn and re-drawn, and this is a genuine piece of American cartographical history.
