Additional Information

Produced and published by Albert Ruger, this stunning depiction of Muskegon shows the city in a period of relative expansion and growth. The earliest establishment was a fur trading post that was constructed sometime between 1790 and 1800. A thriving lumber industry had attracted immigrants from Germany, Ireland, and Canada who established numerous communities along cultural lines that exist to this day. Today Muskegon is a popular summer destination known for its sailing, pleasure boating, and as a commercial and cruise port. The historic architecture is an enduring link to the past that also attracts tourists.

Ruger pioneered the birds-eye perspective style and helped bring these depictions to popularity. Panoramic maps served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic features and other economic opportunities. They remained among the most popular style of map until the 1920s, when advances in aerial photography made them obsolete. They are historically significant examples with a unique aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Ruger was among a select group of cartographers responsible for creating more than half of all birds-eye perspectives of towns and cities across the United States.

Following the conclusion of the American Civil War, Muskegon was developing a distinct culture and local economy. As the nation entered the period of Reconstruction, Michigan attracted numerous immigrants from the American south who established neighborhoods and communities, many of which remain to this day.
