Produced and published by American cartographer and lithographer Albert Ruger, this stunning depiction of one of the most iconic cities of the West. Ruger was a pioneer of birds eye perspectives and the first to achieve success with this style of illustration. Ruger’s work is immediately recognizable and transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Located on the Missouri River and the largest city in Nebraska, Omaha’s rich history and unique culture have allowed it to thrive since it was founded in 1854. Its central location made it a transportation hub in the nineteenth century, and the groundbreaking for the first transcontinental railroad in 1863 spurred growth both economically and in population. 1868 marked the end of the so-called Pioneer Era, and Omaha was advancing as development increased and numerous neighborhoods were established along cultural lines. The Union Stockyards, which were established in the 1880s, furthered Omaha’s growth, and it was said to be the fastest-growing city in the United States.
The first meatpacking operation was established in the 1870s and attracted thousands of immigrants from central and southern Europe who were attracted to the city for plentiful work. The years following the conclusion of the Civil War saw Omaha was transforming the American West's landscape.
