Created by Albert Ruger, one of the most prolific cartographers of the 19th century, this panoramic view of Ypsilanti, Michigan captures the city during a period of early growth, before it experienced a significant boom in the 20th century. Much of this growth was driven by the Ford Motor Company's Willow Run Bomber Plant, which produced over 8,000 Consolidated B-24 Bombers during World War II. Additionally, Ford Lake was created when the company dammed the Huron River to generate hydroelectric power, further cementing the area's industrial importance.
Located just 8 miles from Ann Arbor and 30 miles from Detroit, Ypsilanti benefited from the broader prosperity of southeastern Michigan during the 19th and 20th centuries. Ford's factories attracted thousands of new residents, particularly from the American South, in search of work and better opportunities, transforming the city into a bustling hub of economic activity.
Ypsilanti is also home to Eastern Michigan University, founded in 1849 as an institution dedicated to teacher education. Over time, it evolved into a four-year university, becoming a cornerstone of the community. The town itself traces its roots back to 1809, when French fur trappers first arrived. A permanent settlement was later established on the eastern bank of the Huron River in 1823 by Major Thomas Woodruff, laying the foundation for the city's continued growth throughout the 19th century.
