Additional Information

Saint Charles is located on the banks of the Missouri River, remains part of the St. Louis Metropolitan area, and is the third oldest city in Missouri. The city's roots go back to the late eighteenth century when French trappers discovered the region and began establishing camps and settlements to ship fur back to thriving markets in the Northeast and Europe. In 1804 the Saint Charles settlement was considered the last 'civilized' stop on the famed Lewis and Clark Expedition that explored the Pacific Northwest following the Louisiana Purchase and set the precedent for numerous settlements in the Oregon and Washington territories in numerous areas across the Great Plains.

The conclusion of the American Civil War only three years prior to this map's publication expanded westward immigration, and rail lines further opened access, allowing Saint Charles to become a thriving gateway to the American West. Bird's eye perspectives were produced as marketing materials to entice residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic features, including government buildings, natural attractions, and thriving mills or manufacturing facilities. After the end of the Civil War, the United States entered a period of significant prosperity during the Industrial Revolution, and the Midwest became a thriving manufacturing hub attracting thousands of residents to towns and cities.

Produced and published by Albert Ruger, an early adopter of the form, this panoramic map bears a distinctive aesthetic and unique style that immediately transports the viewer back in time. This is a rare piece of nineteenth-century American cartographical history.
