Additional Information
Albert Ruger's 1870 view of Austin, Minnesota, drawn for the Madison firm of Ruger and Stoner, looks northeast across the seat of Mower County. Its streets and buildings are set out in an oblique aerial perspective, with a keyed index identifying the points of interest.
Prints of this kind were sold ahead of publication to residents whose homes and shops would appear on them. Austin had grown quickly since the railroad arrived a few years earlier, turning a river crossing on the southern prairie into a shipping center for wheat.
Ruger had joined the publisher J. J. Stoner by this date, and the two worked a circuit through the upper Mississippi states in 1869 and 1870, recording one community after another. Their method depended on advance orders gathered door to door before a single copy was made.
The composition stands as a testament to the confidence of a frontier settlement in its own future and offers a window into a Minnesota town at the moment its fortunes turned. Prized by collectors of Midwestern history and panoramic art, it warms a cabin or study.
