Produced by one of the most prolific cartographers of the nineteenth century, Albert Ruger, this depiction of Wheeling, West Virginia, shows the city in a period of significant transformation in the years following the conclusion of the American Civil War. Ruger was a pioneer of the birds-eye perspective style and produced numerous illustrations of towns and cities across America. These maps bear a distinctive style and unique aesthetic that immediately transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. They served primarily as marketing materials to promote promise civic and economic features to entice residents and merchants alike.
Wheeling lies in the foothills of the iconic Appalachian Mountains and on the banks of the Ohio River. By the latter portions of the nineteenth century, Wheeling had become a central industrial hub for the region, and immigrants from across Western Europe and the southern portions of the United States flocked to the city eager for opportunities in the growing manufacturing industries. Iron milling was the primary industry and earned the town the nickname of Nail City. It was also a major rail hub which further increased access and spurred on a population boom after the Civil War.
As westward expansion increased during the nineteenth century, Wheeling became an essential gateway for settlers who needed to stock up on supplies before their arduous journey. One of West Virginia’s most notable cities, Wheeling has a rich history and unique culture captured in this stunning birds-eye perspective.
