Mankato was officially organized on May 11, 1858, the same day Minnesota was granted statehood. Located at the confluence of the Minnesota and Blue Sky rivers, Mankato remained an economic and cultural hub for southern Minnesota and one of the largest cities outside of the Minneapolis-Saint Paul metropolitan area. Mankato was experiencing a tremendous period of growth and transformation at the time of this panoramic maps publication in 1870. The years following the conclusion of the American Civil War were transformative for the region as residents flocked to Mankato from Western Europe and the American South, eager for work in the thriving manufacturing, logging, and agricultural industries.
This bird's eye perspective was produced by one of the early pioneers of the form, Albert Ruger, a Prussian immigrant who established a lithography firm in Chicago and would go on to inspire numerous other companies to produce similar works that were intended to attract residents and merchants alike. Bird's eye perspectives feature a unique style and distinctive aesthetic that transports the viewer back in time and creates a lasting bond between the past and present while illustrating how cities evolved and expanded throughout history. Ruger's work remains some of the most prominent pieces due to the fact that he was often the first to produce panoramic maps of many towns and cities in the Midwest.
As Minnesota grew in the latter portions of the nineteenth century, Mankato continued to attract residents that found robust communities with shared cultural traditions.
