The State Capital of Kentucky and one of America's most iconic cities, Frankfort's rich History and unique place in American History distinguish the town. A Union stronghold during the Civil War, Frankfort was briefly captured by Confederate forces in 1862, the only union Capital to be captured during the conflict. Kentucky became the fifteenth state in 1792, and Frankfort was designated to become the Capital with construction of the statehouse beginning in 1829.
Produced and published by prolific American illustrator, cartographer, and lithographer Albert Ruger, this detailed depiction shows the city in a period of significant transformation, prosperity, and growth. Bird's eye perspectives were among the most popular illustrations from the middle of the nineteenth century until the 1920s, and Ruger's works have been included in the Smithsonian archives. These pieces were produced as promotional materials for cities looking to entice industrialists and workers alike while also featuring prominent civic features and notable building or geographic features. Ruger was among five mapmakers who produced nearly half of all known bird's eye perspectives during this era.
