Additional Information
Dating to 1874, this topographical map places Lake Tahoe at its center, the Sierra lake set among the mountains along the California and Nevada line, with the towns, rivers, mountain passes, and railroads of the surrounding country shown around its silvery shore.
It was compiled by Ferdinand von Leicht with J.D. Hoffmann and published at San Francisco in 1874, during the booming Comstock years, when silver brought miners, ore wagons, and the first railroads into the mining towns east of the lake, then among the busiest in the West.
Two inset views show Lake Tahoe and Donner Lake, while the sheet takes in the Truckee River, the mountain passes, and the silver towns of Virginia City, Carson City, and Reno. The Central Pacific line runs across the top, with steamships and lakeside inns marking Tahoe as an early getaway.
This map stands as a testament to the silver-era Sierra, offering a window into Lake Tahoe as an early mountain retreat, when steamers still ran the lake. One of the most picturesque old maps of the West, it brings a crisp, high-country freshness to any living room, office, or study.
