Additional Information

Published in 1874 by Geo. H. Ellsbury and V. Green of Chicago, this sweeping view presents Minneapolis, Minnesota, looking east from above the western bluffs. Macalester College dominates the foreground while the original Hennepin Avenue bridge spans the Mississippi River toward the far shore.

The town was barely two decades old when this image appeared, having incorporated in 1856 around the Falls of St. Anthony. The thundering cataract powered dozens of sawmills and flour mills that processed timber and wheat from the vast northern prairies, fueling explosive growth after the Civil War.

By 1874, Minneapolis had established itself as the milling capital of the Midwest, grinding grain shipped by rail from farms across Minnesota, the Dakotas, and beyond. Pillsbury and Washburn would soon build massive stone facilities along the riverbank that cemented the region's dominance over national production for decades.

This reproduction provides insight into a frontier settlement racing toward industrial prominence on the power of falling water and fertile soil. Considered among the finest early views of Minneapolis, it brings pioneering spirit to any office, study, or living room.
