Additional Information
Produced and published by prominent American cartographer H.H. Bailey this stunning depiction of the State Capital of New Hampshire shows the city in a transformative period as increased access was granted to the region with the expansion of the rail Iines throughout the American Northeast. Concord would become a transportation hub and experience significant population growth in the late-nineteenth century. European immigrants were drawn to the region by jobs in the flourishing textile manufacturing industry and established communities along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day.
Birdseye perspectives were produced to feature prominent local features, civic buildings, and notable residents to attract industrialists and workers alike. Local merchants and residents would also display these illustrations in a show of civic pride. Because these maps weren't produced for technical use, the illustrators were able to depict the city with more detail and embellishment, and their distinctive aesthetic and unique style immediately transport the viewer back in time. These depictions create an indelible link to the past in ways that technical maps cannot.
Concord became one of the most iconic American cities in New England, and historians will never forget its place in the history of the American Revolution. As the nation recovered from the Civil War in the late nineteenth century, Concord was flourishing. The Middlesex canal allowed access to Boston to the South, and this access further spurred the cities local economy. The distinguishing characteristics of this illustration make it a genuine piece of America's cartographical history.
