Moran joined the Hayden geological survey in 1871 as the only artist to document this remote region. His sketches, paired with William Henry Jackson's photographs, gave Congress visual proof of the area's extraordinary beauty and helped convince legislators to establish the world's inaugural national park in 1872.
Louis Prang commissioned fourteen paintings from Moran depicting scenes from his western expeditions, issuing them as the celebrated "American Chromo" series.
