Produced and published by prolific American mapmaker Albert Ruger and his Chicago Lithographing Company, this stunning depiction of one of America's most iconic cities bears a unique aesthetic and signature detail found in Ruger's productions. Founded in 1778, Louisville is one of the oldest cities west of the Appalachians. Its proximity to the Ohio Falls spurred early growth as boats traveling the Mississippi River had to unload goods before continuing their journey up or down the river. This warehousing industry attracted immigrants from throughout Ireland, Western Europe, and England. These immigrants established numerous communities based along cultural lines, many of which exist to this day.
Bird's eye perspectives were produced as marketing materials for many cities across America and featured prominent civic buildings, notable residences, and other attractions. Because they don't contain technical information, they contain more detailed artistic flourishes and unique characteristics. Merchants and residents would also display these illustrations in a show of civic pride, while they were advertised across other regions to attract industrialists and workers alike.
Published just one year after the first running of the iconic Kentucky Derby, this map shows Louisville in a period of significant growth and transformation. The 1870s found Louisville expanding politically, culturally, and economically. The completion of rail lines at the beginning of the decade expanded access beyond the Mississippi River and spurred even more population growth as Americans resettled.
