Inhabited with English settlers from surrounding Connecticut counties, Middletown was established as early as 1650 and became a prominent river port for more than two centuries. As the Industrial Revolution brought manufacturing and factories to the city in the mid-nineteenth century, the town’s population expanded, and new immigrants from Ireland and Italy that formed neighborhoods and communities based on cultural lines. Many of these culturally distinct areas exist to this day. Home to the iconic Wesleyan University, Middletown has a deep history of education, including the construction of Connecticut’s first public High School.
Produced and published by one of the most prolific mapmakers of his time, Oakley Hoopes Bailey, this stunning depiction captures Middletown in a period of significant growth and transformation. Bailey’s career lasted more than five decades into the 1920s. Birdseye perspectives were widely popular from the middle of the nineteenth century until advances in aviation and photography eventually made them obsolete. His characteristic flourishes and distinctive aesthetic immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. They served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike and featured prominent civic and economic features as well as natural attractions.
As nearby towns like New Haven grew during the nineteenth century, Middletown’s economy attracted another wave of Polish and German immigrants eager to find work in the numerous factories and manufacturing plants in the city. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history which illustrates Middletown’s rich history.
