Additional Information

Produced by one of the most prolific panoramic mapmakers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Oakley Hoopes Bailey, this depiction of Foxborough shows the city in a period of growth, prosperity, and transformation. Bailey illustrated birds-eye perspectives for more than five decades and published nearly four hundred maps focusing on his native Ohio and other cities across the northeastern United States. Birdseye perspectives were among the most popular illustration styles during the latter portions of the nineteenth century and served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike. These maps were not drawn to scale but highlighted prominent civic features, distinct geography, and notable buildings or institutions.

Some twenty-two miles southwest of Boston, Foxborough was first settled in 1704 and officially incorporated in 1798; the city remained a small community until expansion in the early twentieth century spurred by its proximity to economic opportunities in Boston. A quintessentially New England town, the town bears a quaint culture with a rich history. Known as the Gem of Norfolk County, the city was named for Charles Fox, an ardent supporter for colonial independence in the years leading up to the American Revolution.

This illustration's unique aesthetic and distinctive style immediately transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. The United States experienced a period of significant prosperity in the years after the Civil War leading to the so-called Gilded Age and the greater Boston area saw extensive expansion and growth.

Our museum quality giclee print comes printed with archival ink on premium heavyweight matte paper. Shipped in a sturdy cardboard tube your print will arrive ready to be framed. This eye-catching vintage map reproduction print makes the perfect gift for anyone that loves history and imagery.
