Produced by William C. Walsh only three decades after the establishment of Mason, Texas, a settlement built around the remote military outpost established in 1851, this depiction shows the region in a period of relative growth and transformation. As Texas Land Commissioner, Walsh was responsible for shaping the state's future, including the construction of the State Capital and original surveys and land allocation for the University of Texas, Austin. He was also responsible for the use of native limestone in the construction of the now-iconic capitol building. Though Walsh was born in Ohio, his family relocated to Texas when he was four, and his role in Texas history cannot be understated.
This detailed production is an authentic piece of cartographical history, and its immediately recognizable style transports the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present. Mason County is located on the iconic Edwards Plateau in central-western Texas and became utilized as prime ranch land throughout the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Though sparsely populated, the region would experience economic prosperity spurred by mineral discoveries and large cattle ranches that would become synonymous with Texas' reputation throughout the nation.
Mason County was primarily settled by German immigrants, and this influence can be seen in the architecture and local culture. Following the outbreak of World War I, local elected officials enacted legislation to outlaw the use of the language in public or government buildings. The region's proud culture has endured throughout its history.
