Produced and published by one of the most prolific American mapmakers, Oakley Hoopes Bailey, this bird’s eye perspective of New Haven shows the city in a period of significant growth, transformation, and prosperity. With a career that spanned five decades, Bailey produced nearly four hundred aerial views of cities across the Northeast primarily focused on Massachusetts and Connecticut. His career began in 1871 after a stint volunteering with the Ohio Volunteer Militia and subsequently graduating from Mount Union College.
Birdseye perspectives were among the most popular illustration from the latter parts of the nineteenth century until the 1920s, when aerial photography allowed the process to take a single day instead of months. This distinction makes these depictions authentic pieces of cartographical history. Their distinctive aesthetic immediately transports the viewer back in time and creates an indelible bond between the past and present. These perspectives featured prominent civic features, notable buildings and were used as promotional materials to attract residents, industrialists, and merchants alike.
The years following the conclusion of the Civil War found New Haven flourishing with thriving manufacturing industries and experienced a population boom from Irish, Italian, and Western European immigrants establishing communities based on cultural lines, many of which exist to this day. New Haven was among the first settlements in New England, which was established in 1637. By the late nineteenth century, New Haven was considered part of New York City’s metropolitan area. The 1872 establishment of rail lines in the region further stimulated the local economy.
