Additional Information
The Winnebago County Seat, Rockford, Illinois, remains an enduring icon of the American North. As the second-largest city in Illinois following Chicago, Rockford has a distinct culture and rich history that began with its first settlements in the mid-1830s. Its geographic location on the Rock River spurred early economic growth and the establishment of manufacturing plants, mills, and other factories. The city’s earliest immigrants were predominantly Irish and Swedish, though, by the 1880, numerous Italian, Polish, Lithuanian, and African American communities were thriving throughout the city and established neighborhoods and communities based on cultural lines, many of which exist to this day.
This birds-eye perspective produced by J.J. Stoner shows the city in a period of significant growth and transformation as the American economy grew in the decades following the conclusion of the Civil War. This illustration style was widely popular during the mid-nineteenth century until advances in aviation made them obsolete by the 1920s. They featured prominent civic buildings and served as marketing materials to attract residents and merchants alike. They are immediately recognizable and transport the viewer back in time, creating an indelible bond between the past and present.
Rockford was the cultural and economic hub of northern Illinois, and the establishment of the Mendelssohn Club in 1884 marked the founding of the oldest music venue in operation in the United States. This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that captures a transformative moment in one of the most iconic northern cities.
