San Diego and Coronado Beach have been important Naval institutions in the years leading up to and including World War II. Located across the bay from San Diego, Coronado Beach was first incorporated in 1890 and remains an enduring destination for Southern California. It has been famed for its beaches since the 1880s, and the Hotel Del Coronado was completed in 1888, cementing it as a prominent resort town for visitors from across the globe. By 1910 Coronado had iconic streetcars that remained a fixture until their decommissioning in 1939. Coronado was considered a tied island until the US Navy filled the Spanish bight in 1944 and connected it to the mainland.
This birds-eye perspective bears a distinct aesthetic and classic style that shows the region in a period of significant growth culturally and economically. The United States gained control of the area following the signing of the Treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo in 1848. This came after Mexico was defeated in the Mexican-American War and the United States had contiguous control of the American West from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean. Panoramic maps were produced to market towns and cities across America, highlighting prominent civic buildings and economic opportunities to attract residents and merchants alike.
This is an authentic piece of American cartographical history that shows the region developing as the nation raced towards the turn of the twentieth century. The West Coast was experiencing great prosperity during the Gilded Age, and Coronado Beach was no different.
