Born Elizabeth Cochrane Seaman in 1864, the pioneering journalist better known by her pseudonym Nellie Bly became one of the most renowned investigative reporters of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Her career began in 1885 after submitting an anonymous response to the Pittsburgh Dispatch, which led to a position at the newspaper and her debut article, "The Girl Puzzle." In it, Bly argued that not all women would become wives and advocated for women's rights in the workplace, establishing her as an early feminist voice in the United States.
After securing a full-time position at the Dispatch, Bly shifted her focus to working-class women's lives, launching an investigative series that exposed harsh conditions faced by female factory workers. She famously went undercover in a copper cable factory, earning praise from workers for revealing the dangerous and exploitative conditions. However, after factory owners complained, Bly was reassigned to the "women's pages," a move that left her frustrated. Seeking greater challenges, she traveled to Mexico as the first female foreign correspondent, reporting on political and social issues. Later, Bly moved to New York City, where she went undercover in a women's mental institution, producing her groundbreaking exposé Ten Days in a Mad-House.
